NTMWD Employees Put “Service Before Self” During February’s Winter Storm

March 30, 2021

The District shares numerous stories of essential workers going above and beyond during extreme weather event

When the crippling winter weather event brought much of the region to a freezing halt in mid-February, employees of the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) pulled together and worked to maintain essential services.

NTMWD employees who are responsible for providing safe, reliable drinking water, wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal worked long hours to make sure operations continued throughout the storm. NTMWD employees faced the numerous challenges with courage and put service before self.

The District thought it important to share some details of the efforts of its employees and vendors, many working behind the scenes, under extreme weather conditions.

Highlights include:

  • Crews working to thaw frozen pipes and equipment during extreme conditions.
  • Fuel deliveries for emergency generators at water and wastewater pump stations, plants and key facilities across the NTMWD system.
  • Laboratory personnel maintained testing operations to assure that safe, clean, treated drinking water was being delivered to Member Cities and Customers.
  • NTMWD executives and supervisors kept in close contact with officials in communities served by the District.
  • Some employees working double shifts and others sleeping on cots in control rooms and other facilities to be on-site to be able to quickly respond to operational issues.
  • Personnel working outside their regular job duties and jumping in to assist where they could.

“Our employees did what was necessary during the storm to make sure the communities and businesses we serve had the critical services we provide,” said Rodney Rhoades, Interim Executive Director of NTMWD.  “We are proud of their efforts, and are grateful for their sacrifices,” Rhoades added.

Download this detailed summary of numerous efforts by our employees. We may not have heard about all of them or have many photos as the team focused on the work at-hand, but we know everyone in the NTMWD family is a “cold weather” hero for their essential service to the communities we serve.
